Healthy habits to develop new skills

Each January, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg resolves to challenge himself in a very specific way. The resolutions vary, but all are accomplishments that can be reached only through sustained effort over time. Put simply, Zuckerberg sets a goal for himself and develops a new habit to reach that goal.

The Incredible Power of Habit

In his book “Outliers,” Malcolm Gladwell examines people such as Bill Gates and The Beatles, who have achieved extraordinary levels of success in their respective fields. He suggests that their accomplishments were not simply due to genius, but also to situations and circumstances which provided opportunities for them to master their crafts. For Gates, early exposure to a virtual computer terminal provided him with thousands of hours of coding experience before he entered college. In the case of the Beatles, extended club bookings throughout Europe gave them extensive performance and practice time before their recording career launched.

In other words, significant, life-changing results are accomplished not through a single act, but rather through a committed, established pattern of behavior.
